The next Metro station we visit, after Altrincham is Navigation Road Station at Broadheath; from the south of Manchester heading towards the centre.

Broadheath is a suburb of Altrincham and it has to be said there’s not a lot to see around the station itself although it is one of only a few metrolink stations that has a level crossing.

The Bridgewater Canal is to it’s rear and when the stretch from Manchester to Runcorn was open in 1776 the Old Packet House was the second stopping place on the journey by boat or barge, providing shelter for passengers and storage facilities for packages for dispatch or collection. The first boat from Manchester was at 8am stopping at the Inn at 10am on it’s way to Runcorn where it moored at 5pm. On the return journey the boat full of people on their way to visit Manchester would stop at the Inn at 4pm.

During the Second World War
The surrounding area was subject to bombing and loss of life; but the firms in Broadheath continued to supply the necessary tools, equipment and armaments needed. King Gorge and Queen Elizabeth paid a visit to Broadheath at the end of hostilities to acknowledge the part it played.

So jump off the tram and go and have a pint in the Old Packet House soak up the history, and maybe after a few, walk along the canal to the next station, at Timperley. Don’t get to close to the edge though!

The Cornerstones Guest House is in a great location for a visit to Manchester; just 2.5 miles from the Old Packet House on the A56.

Myself and Dorothy went to see the Black Swan in Altrincham (just 1.5 miles down the road) which was great by the way; I’ll not go into detail, I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.

The surprise was, we came out of the cinema about 7.30 and thought where to eat. Manchester centre’s about 8 miles down the road but we thought we’ed stay in Altrincham (all-tring-ham) deciding to ride around to see what was on offer.
We found Yara a family run restaurant selling traditional Lebanese and Syrian food.
On entering we were asked if we had booked, which we hadn’t; after a minute or two the waiter said it was ok but they needed the table back at 8:30, which I hate; we looked at each other, hadn’t booked so couldn’t grumble and decided to say.
The conversation was taking place in an area just as we entered the restaurant, the waiter pointed to a table set for 6 just where we were stood and turned away. We both looked at each other and as I found out later both thinking the same thing, ‘not if we have to sit here’.

We ended up on the first floor, the menu was just up my street, different dishes like tapas which you could order large or small portions of, I ordered grilled halloumi cheese with pitta bread and Dorothy had chicken wings for starters, followed by mixed and shish kabab with a really nice Lebanese rice and greek salad served with two lovely dips. Nothing really out of the ordinary, but it was all really very nice, fresh, vibrant authentic middle eastern food, full of flavour; and after 2 years they still let you bring your own wine with only £1.00 corkage, which we didn’t know about at the time but where in heaven to find they sold Chateau Musar at a very reasonable price.

Not fine dinning, but great food in a relaxed and fun atmosphere with super efficient staff. Bookings are essential, particularly at weekends.

The Cornerstones Guest House is just down the road from Altrincham and the Yara Restaurant and just 12 minutes from Manchester city center by Metro.

This map of Manchester City Centre shows all the major car parks and also the metro rout through the city. You can divid the map up into three triangles.

From Trinity Way and the Railway line to Deansgate (A56)

From Deansgate to Mosley Street-Lower Mosley Street

From Mosley Street-Lower Mosley Street to, I was going to say Whitworth Street but will take it to the railway line.

From Trinity Way and the Railway line to Deansgate on the west side of the city.

Castlefield

In the bottom corner just below Liverpool road you will find what was the life line of the industrial revolution in Manchester, the Bridgewater Canal docks and locks, from hear you can sale a barge up the Bridgewater Canal, link with the Manchester Ship Canal and into Liverpool’s estuary.

You can hire out barges for the day, with a bar and food provided it’s a really good, fun day out.

It’s interesting walking round the docks and locks and visualise what life must have been like for thousands of canal workers.

Bars and Resturants on our Map of Manchester

Pop in one of the many bars and restaurants. I would be writing for a week if I tried to discribe all the bars and resturants so here’s a few that have sprung up by the side of the canal as we pass by them; ‘Dukes 92’ (92 being the final lock on the Rochdale Canal) being a favourite and Dimitris Tapas Bar just on the front of Deansgate.

Dukes92

If there’s one place that deservers a mention on our map of Manchester it’s the Museum of Science and Industry a great place for the kids to enjoy. Both the Museum and Granada Studios are just on the other side of Liverpool road.

As you head north things get a little more sombre passing the equivalent of London’s Harley Street, St Johns Street, and Manchester Crown Court.

Things liven up again around King St West and Blackfriars Road as you round on the top of Deansgate which houses some of the city’s must be seen in bars.

If you’re looking for accommodation in Manchester you may need a Metro Map of Manchester click on the link to find both.

Hope our map of Manchester as been of some help, I’ll follow up with the second of the three triangles in my next post.

The GMEX Has a New Name

Or should we say it’s gone back to its previous name, Central Station.
Restore back to life in 1986 after lying dilapidated for years; old Central Station was the key connection by rail from the City of Manchester to Liverpool.
Christened the Greater Manchester Exhibition Centre, GMEX was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth after refurbishing costs of £20million; transforming into one of England’s largest exhibition centres.

Older people still refer to it as the GMEX but no doubt over the years it will become know as it’s new name ‘Manchester Central’

At over 10,000 sq metres it is also one of the countries biggest, spaces held up without interior supporting columns, its gigantic vaulted roof held up by sheer engineering inventiveness and uncomplicated geometry.

The hall can seat more than 9000 people. There are a further 2,250 sq metres of adjoining land adjacent to the main hall for temporary structures and exhibitions, with onsite parking for over 1,500 cars.
Regular exhibitions are held with everything from Marine to PC Fairs, Motor Homes and Home exhibitions.

I never realised how many different street markets there are in and around Manchester until we received Manchester City Councils brochure ‘Manchester a City of Markets’
The seven day a week Arndale Market on Market Street in the centre of Manchester (open 9am to 6pm) has everything you could image in a shopping mall because thats what it is really, although it’s in ‘Manchester a City of Markets’ brochure it’s not what you’d picture a traditional market to be.

Church Street Market opens Mon – Sat 9am to 5pm. This is a traditional open market in the gateway of the Northern Quarter; selling fruit and veg, books, clothing, farm produce and lots, lots more. March 2010 marked the end of a significant face lift for Church Street Market making sure it stands the test of time for generations to come.

Flower Market

There’s flower markets in St Ann’s Sq and Thurs, Fri and Sat in Piccadilly Gardens providing an infusion of colour that brings home all the different seasons no mater what the weather.

Tib Street Market is all about fashion; every Saturday from 10am – 5pm, it attracts some of Manchester most up and coming designers; quirky, handmade and ethically sauced pieces are all on display; you can rummage for hours.

Tib St Fashion Market

Also in Piccadilly Gardens on every second and forth Saturday there’s both a ‘Real Food Market’ and a Fair Trade Market.
You’ll find an impressive selection of traditional products at this fortnightly market with farmers selling fresh home grown and home reared produce; most of the stallholders run family owned businesses, putting there heart and soul into the food they sell.

Accommodation in Manchester – Which is the Best Part

Sale Water Park

You won’t really find traditional bed and breakfast accommodation in Manchester Centre; what you will find is hundreds of ‘L’ shaped bedrooms in a large number of hotels, and it doesn’t really matter which hotel you pick there all pretty much designed the same, unless you ask for something different then you pay the eart

The more traditional bed and breakfasts and guest houses providing accommodation, are found in the suburbs and leafy suburbs of Manchester.

Imperial War Museum Manchester

So north, south, east, west, which is the best location; if you work on the process of elimination using transport links and the time it takes into Manchester City Centre as a priority; being close to the much loved Manchester Metro is a big plus.

It runs from the north, starting out in Bury going through Manchester to the south, ending in the town of Altrincham, with a branch running off to the east from Cornbrook Metro Station to Eccles (as in, Eccles Cake: In 1793 James Birch’s shop on the corner of Vicarage Road in Eccles began selling small, flat, raisin-filled cakes. They sold, quite literally, like hot cakes).

On it’s way to Eccles it passes Salford Quays which houses The Lowery Centre

The Lowery Centre

and Imperial War Museum there’s one or two large hotels and a few two star rated bad and breakfast just 15 minutes from Manchester centre.

Your accommodation in Manchester should be no more than 15 minutes outside the city centre and anything to the north is really beyond that time limit.

The south side of Manchester has the leafy suburbs of Sale and Altrincham which both boast their own playhouses, sports centres and good restaurants. Altrincham is about 25 minutes from the city, which if I was to stick to the guide lines would rule it out; but their both popular locations because of their easy access into the city by Metro, and further down the A56 is the beautiful Peak District which is just 45 minutes away.

Fifteen Minutes Out from the City

Is Brooklands Metro Station at Sale; on the ride into Manchester from Brooklands you can pick up a free shuttle bus to ‘The Trafford Centre’ at

Manchester United Stadium

Stretford Station, take the a club tour at Manchester United F.C. visit Lancashire County Cricket Club both from Old Trafford Station; and you can still jump off at Cornbrook Station to get to Salford Quays, the next stop is the city centre with all it’s attractions.

So if you’re looking for accommodation in Manchester, south of the city is the place to be.

The Cornerstones Guest House in Sale is rated in The Michelin Accommodation Guide; view our video to see inside this lovely Victorian House.

All is reviealed in a Guest House in Manchester

“Hello” I shout back, she sound’s a little rough this morning, must have cold.

I switched on the kettle and went to ask Ms Lewis if she’d like tea or coffee, when I went in the dinning room Ms Lewis was sat in the large bay window only she’d turned her chair to face the side of the bay producing only her profile with the bright morning sun blaring in behind her so I only caught a glance of her when I asked if she’d like tea or coffee.

“Tea please” with a hint of royal Berkshire.

I was back out to make the tea, waiting for the kettle to¬†boiling I thought, I know I only caught a glance and it’s first thing in the morning but Ms Ann Lewis was looking decidedly rough.

The tea and toast where ready and Antony’o waiter of the year was gliding into the room as of thousands of times before, this time the sun was behind the clouds and Ms Lewis turned to face me, difference being in the short time I’d been out of the room to make the tea and toast she had aged 42 years, but the¬†same build as the young lady I let in last night.

I was in shock, dumbfounded

It was Dorian Gray after the mirror broke.

What could I say to her? I was stunned: Do yon realize your in a Guest House in Manchester.

Have you looked in the mirror because some ones really got in for you? Nooooo.

What ever make up and foundation you had on yesterday you want to patent it? Nooooo

Were you a make up artist on Star Wars? Ye, Noooo.

In the end I plumbed for.

“I I I I I I Ieeeee¬† never let you in here¬†last night did I”

“No that was my daughter” Smiling so sweetly.

“But she booked in and went up to the room” I said.

“Yes I was very late so she was going to stay here and I was going to stay at her house”.

“But she gave your name”

“We change our minds and she gave me the key”

“She never said anything to me”

“Hhhhhhmmm that would have been a good idea” Royal Birkshire.

Another day in the life of the Cornerstones Guest House Manchester.

The Plot Thickens

Place:  Cornerstones b and b Manchester Date 03.06.09.  The names of the inderviduals have been altered to shield the innocent.

This is when Basil started taking over. What woman? The woman who phoned, who was the woman who phoned? yyyeeesss no name.

The young woman you had booked in Ms Ann Lewis as arrived and you have another person coming at 11pm that is the sister of what sounded like a woman of 60 years of age, now ether there farther was a rum trump or you are in trouble, whats more when she arrives at 11pm you are fully booked and have no bed for her aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrr.

How as this happened? Now I must hold my hands up here and let you into a trade secret and if any Hotelier says different there telling porky pies.

Over the 24 years of running our Bed and Breakfast in Manchester there as been the odd occasion, well lest than that,¬†oddist¬†occasion (I hope them tow guys from Newcastle don’t read this or the woman from Bristol, than there was) I digress, the oddest occasion when we or was it my wife (i hope she doesn’t read this) have forgot to put some one in the¬†book now the computer¬†(wasn’t it good when you could write in books, them were the days)¬†or double booked like the famous Mr Wrigg and Mr Wagg incident.

So my minds set, we’ve forgot to put her in the computer, she’s coming at eleven o’clock, who is? I don’t know and we’ve no room for her.

I waited 10.30pm, 11pm, 12pm, 12.30am. I had to go to bed, I had a 6am start the next day, the Americans where all up for a 7am breakfast and Ms Ann Lewis was the last at 7.30am. So if the front door bell rang in the middle of the night¬†I would have to get up at what ever time and tell who ever it is she’s on the couch, oh no.

The alarm clock went off at 6am, ether no one came last night or I was in that much of a deep sleep I  never heard anything. I went into the kitchen to start taking the breakfast fare through to the dinning room, to my suprise there was note from Ms Lewis lying on the floor just inside the dinning room saying she will now be down for breakfast at 9am, no problem. The Americans where up and out the door after breakfast.

I wasn’t bothered about waiting up until 12.30am,¬†I was just glad I didn’t have to confront some one at that time of night¬†with no bed to give them.

8.50am I get an

“Hello” Just out side the kitchen door.
