You’ll have no trouble finding a bed and breakfast in Manchester but it’s always an anxious time
arriving at your accommodation, you never know what you’re going to get, no matter how many stars are
awarded. It can make or break your stay especially if it’s a meaningful stay with your partner.

There’s all types of accommodation in Manchester, Hotels, Guest Houses and Bed and Breakfast, but where is the best place to stay without paying the earth, that’s really nice and is somewhere you can
feel at home and relaxed?

The Cornerstones Guest House is located in south Manchester; rated in the ‘Michelin Accommodation Guide’
for the last five years, which is part of the renowned ‘Michelin Food Guide’.

It has a ‘4 Diamond Highly Commended’ rating from the Tourist Board and has just recently been christened a ‘Boutique Guest House’ by a ‘bestof.com’ representative.

Built in 1872 by Sir William Cunliff Brooks, ‘Lord of the Manor’ with it’s large spacious bed rooms, high ceiling and large windows it’s infused with light, warmth and elegance.

Some bed and breakfasts in Manchester can be just that, and out you go. One of the appeals of the Cornerstones is the building itself, people love walking around the rooms and garden.
The decor is a mixture of contemporary and Victorian splender and yet this is just a bed and breakfast nothing more; we don’t do evening meal simply because within walking distance you can find a host of restaurants serving all different types of cuisine.

Room 8

Mostly used by people on business in the week; of which we are well catered for with free Wifi
connection and photo copying on site; after saying that we open our arms to tourists, people visiting
the area, wedding guests and theatre goers.

The Pennine Trail is just on our door step for cyclists and walkers alike and all have the convenience of the Manchester Metro Link, a 5 minute walk away, which takes 15 minutes to the city centre; you’ll pass an abundance of restaurants, theatres, bars and night life, Lancashire C.C.C., Manchester United F.C. and a shuttle service to The Trafford Centre.

Room 4

If you want an early start, arriving in the morning, your room may not be ready from the night before but you can sign in, leave your bags, take your key and off you go for the day with no worry of what time you need to get back because you have your key and you’ll find your bags in your room on your return.

Cornerstones

Our aim is to make people feel at home, comfortable and relaxed; and after 25 years of running our bed and breakfast in Manchester we like to think we know a little about that.

The Cornerstones Guest House in Manchester is just one hour away from Bakewell the ancient capital of the Peak District.

The concurring Romans claimed the fertile land on the West bank of the river Wyr at a spot where it was fordable, and where there was Romans there was trade and commerce and so the site became a crossing point and meeting place for local trade.

Some years later the crossing point was given status by a number of bridges being built on the site, however there’s only two remaining today one of them being the subject of many photographs is the 800 year old Five Arched Bridge.

In the early days of this towns long and fascinating history; the Saxon Edward the Elder ordered a fortified borough to be built here around 924; marked only by a mound now, known as Castle Hill. The growth of Badequella also merited a mention in the Domesday Book of 1085.

There seems no doubt that trading on the site has gone on since Roman times however it only been, recorded from the 1300. The first recorded fair was held in 1254 and a charter was granted by King Edward III in 1330. For nearly 700 years the farming community has flocked from miles around for the weekly sale of livestock domestic goods and provisions. That tradition continues today with Markets held every Monday and, unlike most of the other local centres, there is a thriving livestock market at the Agricultural Centre and also a farm market once a month which is well worth a visit. The big event of the year is the annual Bakewell Show and this year is the 180th, which takes place on Wednesday 4th & Thursday 5th of August 2010.

The river provides beautiful walks from the five arch bridge; up stream leads to Arkwright Mill, via Holme Hall and Holme Bridge dating back to the 1600.

Bakewell is a straight run from Cornerstones Guest House along the Manchester ring road and on to the A623 which go strait through the centre of the Peak District.

One of the annual Peak Districts events is dressing the well or well dressing which takes place in all the shrouding villages through out the year; each dressing there own well in competition with the whole of the Peak District; you will see the dressed wells with flowers and ribbons and everything you can imagine.

Bakewell has something for everybody a full range of shops, many historic buildings, pubs and restaurants, wonderful walks and numerous emporiums of excellence.

Great Food

We have been in each of these and highly recommend them.

Rowley Restaurant and Bar sits on the edge of the beautiful Chatsworth Estate in the pretty village of Baslow. The venue is under the ownership of Max & Susan Fischer of the one star Michelin restaurant at Baslow Hall and their Head Chef Rupert Rowley.

Well funnly enough the next one I was going to mention was Baslow Hall.
These are both just outside of Bakwell.

The Riverside at Ashford on the Water is a beautiful place and restaurant and is the closest to Bakewell.

And last but by no means least; what is this ancient medieval town special known for in the 21century.
The one and only Bakwell Pudding sometimes erroneously called a Bakewell tart, know world wide, well definitely in the north of England you must try one when you go.

The Cornerstones Guest House offers independent accommodation in Manchester is ideally situated for a day out in Bakewell in the Peaks and City Centre which is just 5 miles down the A56.

Dunham is derived from the Anglo-Saxon dun, meaning hill; The Manorof Dunham was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 as having belonged to a Saxon Nobleman Aelfward. The Massey half came as a result of the Norman invasion of 1066 when Hamo de Masci became Baron of Dunham and most of the surrounding area to the north, from Dunham and Bowdon as far Baugley to the north west, but only Dunham was given the Barons name; Dunham Masci changing through descendants for several generations to ‘de Masci’, ‘de Mace’, ‘de Macei’, ‘de Mascy’, ‘de Massey. Only to change hands in the early 1400 to the Booth family. Dunhams old medieval hall was destroyed in 1616 when it was rebuilt. The mill and deer park was first mentioned in 1353 however the present mill only dates back to the 1860′s. The river Bollin turned the mill wheel, which as only been restored in recent years, and was the centre of employment in this mainly arable land of the 15th century.

The Cornerstones Guest House is a well placed Bed and Breakfast in Manchester to explore the heart of the Peak District with it’s beautiful towns and villages. Just an hour from the Cornerstones along the scenic A623 close to the town Bakewell is the unusually village of ‘Edensor‘ pronounced ‘Enzer’

Part of the Chatsworth estate; at first glance it is mistaken for a typical picture post card English village; the truth is¬† was one of the country’s first designer villages.

Edensor’s life began as a cluster of cottages set aside for the workers of the Chatsworth estate, however in the 1760′s Lanelot ‘Capability’ Brown was commissioned by the owner of Chatsworth Hall to design a park and a number of out buildings and cottages where tossed and the river was rerouted to create the required view. 80 years past when the then Duke of Devonshire engage Joseph Paxton to create the village that stands today; most of the architecture was drawn up by John Robertson of Derby and between them both they knock everything to the ground except ‘Park Cottage’ know as Naboth’s Vinyard in recognition of the owners stubbornness to move when the park was being developed .

The rebuilt village came with a twist of which the Dowager Duchess of Dvonshire was heard to say.

His concept was a work of fantasy, extravagant, not always practical and contributing to a feeling of Victorian eccentricity.

The twist was that they where built in the style of Tudor, Italianate, Norman and Swiss architecture of the day with no two chimneys the same. In the centre is St Peters Church built on the site of a 14th century chapel incorporating Norman relics and carvings. In the centre of the church lies Joseph Paxton in a tomb said to be bigger that any of the Dukes of Devonshire’s.

Wander round the village to see these beautiful cottages and envy the people who live in them and don’t tell me it won’t cross your mind in wonder, as to how you are able to live in one of them. However there are some drawbacks if you want to paint your cottage you have to consider the fact that all the buildings are individually Listed Buildings in a Conservation Village, within a grade 1 Listed Parkland, in an Inheritance Tax Management Plan, in the National Park in UK, Europe.

Stop off at the post office for a cup of tea, home made lunches or freshly-baked scones and I have heard there’s also picnic baskets available to enjoy in Chatsworth Park.

If you fancy something more substantial the small, market town of Bakewell is just down the road on the banks of the river Wye where you can enjoy the famous Bakewell Tart with custard of course.

Providing bed and breakfast on the south side of Manchester; the Cornerstones Guest House it in a great position for day’s out in the beautiful Peak District.

Most of the Guest Houses in Manchester are to the south of the city including ourselfes however we find that we are one the closes to a new development proposed by Peel Holdings. Ocean Gateway‚ will be a mere £50 billion pound investment. The concept will be over a 50 mile stretch cutting through the North Wests industrial heart land along the Ship Canal Corridor‚ from the mouth of the River Mersey down Manchester Ship Canal and into the centre of Manchester. Most of the work will take place on the southside of Manchester; and should ceate quite a few new jobs and a much better out look for hotels and Guest Houses in Manchester after such a lean pireod over the last 18 months.

Close the information bubble on the map and click on the minus sign to view the proposed area.

John Whittaker chairman of Peel Holdings as likened the development to the size of the Themes Gateway in London; emphasizing it’s not just for Peel Holdings but along with all other initiatives and developer within the Gateway region it will become a key source of new investment, jobs, development and environmental improvements. He has said it wont just be about real estate development and tall buildings but cover every aspect of our lives, The Environment, Transport, housing what he called ‘The Media Silicone Valley of Europe’, Energy from clean coal, Wind power, Tidal Power, Energy from waste, Utilities, Telecoms, Ship Building, Logistics in Ports, Airports, and what he called Supper Ports, as well as Hotels, Golf Courses, Races Courses.

The port developments would take place in Salford, Warrington, Ince and The Wirral.

Now I must admit he never mentioned anything about Guest Houses in Manchester but where here to do our bit, to house the architects and engineers that build it.

Belle Epoque

Impressive from the moment you approach, step inside and be wowed or wooed . This sumptuously styled restaurant with rooms is both classic and modern, intimate and cosy and opulently romantic.

I was fortunately ‘set up’ for a surprise birthday party; which my husband was responsible for and incidentally pulled of to perfection.

Due to our party numbering 15 plus 1 toddler/high chair, we were restricted to a short menu choice. I understood this and it was not a problem, however, there was a redolent air of disappointment from some of the others. This was short lived after just one spoonful of the oven roasted tomato soup; there were oohs and aahs placing it in a hierarchy of starter choice, everyone that ordered it tried to make the others feel envy but oh no; not those that ordered the chicken liver and foie gras pate, it was truly sublime served with exquisite chutney and lightly toasted brioche, worth a trip back for that alone. Most of the party plumbed for the roast lamb ‘Sunday joint’ AND WITHOUT EXCEPTION the best roast dinner ever (and my mother’s is hard to beat). One or two more roasties was the consensus.

Opulence

Having said that, I chose to skip dessert initially; until a cacophony of drools over the ‘straight-to- the -pleasure -point ‘ rose above table and an attentive waiter brought me mine….Divine.

The service was both friendly and confident deserving the excellent long lasting reputation they have retained for over 30 years.

Best birthday ever and not even a major one..

The Plot Thickens

Place:  Cornerstones b and b Manchester Date 03.06.09.  The names of the inderviduals have been altered to shield the innocent.

This is when Basil started taking over. What woman? The woman who phoned, who was the woman who phoned? yyyeeesss no name.

The young woman you had booked in Ms Ann Lewis as arrived and you have another person coming at 11pm that is the sister of what sounded like a woman of 60 years of age, now ether there farther was a rum trump or you are in trouble, whats more when she arrives at 11pm you are fully booked and have no bed for her aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrr.

How as this happened? Now I must hold my hands up here and let you into a trade secret and if any Hotelier says different there telling porky pies.

Over the 24 years of running our Bed and Breakfast in Manchester there as been the odd occasion, well lest than that,¬†oddist¬†occasion (I hope them tow guys from Newcastle don’t read this or the woman from Bristol, than there was) I digress, the oddest occasion when we or was it my wife (i hope she doesn’t read this) have forgot to put some one in the¬†book now the computer¬†(wasn’t it good when you could write in books, them were the days)¬†or double booked like the famous Mr Wrigg and Mr Wagg incident.

So my minds set, we’ve forgot to put her in the computer, she’s coming at eleven o’clock, who is? I don’t know and we’ve no room for her.

I waited 10.30pm, 11pm, 12pm, 12.30am. I had to go to bed, I had a 6am start the next day, the Americans where all up for a 7am breakfast and Ms Ann Lewis was the last at 7.30am. So if the front door bell rang in the middle of the night¬†I would have to get up at what ever time and tell who ever it is she’s on the couch, oh no.

The alarm clock went off at 6am, ether no one came last night or I was in that much of a deep sleep I  never heard anything. I went into the kitchen to start taking the breakfast fare through to the dinning room, to my suprise there was note from Ms Lewis lying on the floor just inside the dinning room saying she will now be down for breakfast at 9am, no problem. The Americans where up and out the door after breakfast.

I wasn’t bothered about waiting up until 12.30am,¬†I was just glad I didn’t have to confront some one at that time of night¬†with no bed to give them.

8.50am I get an

“Hello” Just out side the kitchen door.
